When an atom loses an electron, it becomes an ion. But ions attract electrons so they normally do not remain ions for long before they become atoms again. But scientists have figured out how to trap ions and protect them from attracting electrons. By trapping the ions, we can now use them, among other things, as powerful processors in quantum computers.
