There are over 20 castles, citadels and fortresses in South Khorasan province. The main reason is because it has always been a strategic region for the central government. Soldiers were trained and prepared to fight invaders. This is the reason why there are also many “Zour-khaneh” or traditional gymnasiums in the region.
