Illustration of Ion Exchange Chromatography and how it works on a particle level.
IEC is a very powerful and selective separation mode. Biomolecules generally have charged groups on their surfaces. The overall charge changes with the pH of the solution. This is the basis for Ion Exchange Chromatography, in which molecules bind to a charged group of the stationary phase.
