Electronic price tags, introduced 1st time in India. These shelf labels can be updated from a centralized computer over wireless. Each label, operates on 2xAA 1.5VDC (readily available) battery.
Range of communication without access point is around 10 meters. With intermediate access points the range can be extended upto 1Km or so.
